The awards luncheon was held on Wednesday, July 23rd 2008 at the
Harbourfront Restaurant. The awards are now in their 29th year and over
60 applications from students were received.
David Ezekiel, ABIC Chairman, introduced Patrick Tannock, Executive
Vice President of ACE Bermuda and ABICEA alumnus, who was the guest
speaker for the event.
The number of scholarships awarded this year was 24 and a record total
of $619,200 was raised for the program.
ABIC is grateful to all the international companies that donated to
this year’s campaign and a special thanks to those companies who
generously sponsored the Corporate Named Awards
The 2008 Awards Recipients are:
Cyniquá Anderson
Cyniquá, a graduate and prefect of
Cedarbridge Academy, will be entering
her Sophomore Year at Johnson& Wales University where she is pursuing a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Network
Engineering. Currently on the Dean’s List,
Cyniquá’s goal is to obtain her Master’s
Degree in Management of Technology and
return to the island to work her way up
to a managerial role within the industry.
Realizing these goals she has taken the
steps to secure summer internship in
the Software Department at CCS Group
Ltd. Cyniquá has been a member of the
St. George’s Original Dancerettes for the
past 12 years. Cyniquá is described by one
of her professors as “having a contagious
personality” and “a team player.” She
admits that she “refuses to settle for
mediocrity,” when it comes to fulfilling
her own expectations of herself.
Krina Arorash
Krina, recently graduated from Saltus
Graduate Year on the Head Masters
Academic Honor Roll. She will be
attending Pace University in the fall
where she will pursue a Bachelor’s Degree
in Finance with the goal of becoming a
Financial Advisor. Krina has developed
her athletic abilities through involvement
in netball, triathlons and as a member
of both the Swans Running Club and
the Mid Atlantic Athletic Club. She has
also performed with the United Dance
Productions and the Jackson School of
Dance. Described as “a lovely young
lady with a refreshingly straight forward
personality,” Krina proclaims that “visions, goals, excelling and making her
country proud are just a few of the things
she has planned for the future.”
Michael Brangman
Michael has been attending Seneca
College where he has maintained an
impressive GPA of 3.6. He will continue
his studies at Northwood University
pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Business
Marketing and Management with a
minor in International Business. He was
described by one of his professors as one
of Seneca’s “most thoughtful, dedicated
and ambitious students.” Michael displays
a keen interest in amateur photography
as a member of Bermuda Photographers
Meet-Up Group and has volunteered for
Heydon Trust. It is his hope to return
home after graduate school with the goal
of “increasing Bermuda’s reputation as
the pre-eminent off shore business sector
in the world,” and to be able to provide a
better life for his mother.
Ade Brown
Ade recently graduated from Saltus
Grammar School on the Headmaster’s
Honor Roll where he served as Deputy
Head Boy. He will be attending Georgia
State University in the fall where he
will pursue a Bachelor of Business
Administration Degree with a major in
Actuarial Science. Ranked at the Top 10%
of his class, Ade was described by one of his
professors as a “first-class mathematician
with excellent intuitive ability as well
as a strong work ethic.” He served his
community through his involvement
as a General Education Diploma Math
Teacher at the Hamilton Seventh Day
Adventist Church and has been a sailing
instructor at the Government Sailing
Program for a number of years. He was a
member of both the Saltus Jazz and Wind
Band as well as a sergeant in the Bermuda
Cadet Corp. Ade credits his involvement
in the CTY program (Center for Talented
Youth) since he was thirteen as the
catalyst which “served greatly to fuel his
interest in the insurance market.”
Rondrica Butterfield
Rondrica, recently graduated from
Mount Saint Agnes Academy, where she
remained an Honour Student since Grade
10. Rondrica will be attending Acadia
University in the fall where she will be
pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree
in Mathematics and Statistics. Described
as “a very independent and determined
young lady,” she was also involved in
the production of the school yearbook
and various school concerts. Rondrica
has given back to the community by
volunteering her time in the Diabetes
Centre, as a candy striper at KEMH
and for the St. John’s Ambulance where
she is currently learning CPR. Whilst
displaying a keen interest in dance, for
which she is skilled in several disciplines,
her commitment to assist in financing
her education by holding a part time job
prevented her from pursuing this passion
further. Rondrica, whose career goal is to
become an Actuary, believes that being
selected as one of the recipients of the
ABIC Award “will open doors for her” and “bring her one step closer to reaching
her target and life long dream of being not
only successful but pleased with what she
does.”
Deshay Caines Deshay, a graduate of Bermuda
Institute, has been attending Oakwood
College for the past year where she is
pursuing a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree
in Business Administration, with a
focus on Information Technology and
Communications. Although her career
goal is to become a Corporate Attorney,
she took the opportunity to hone
her administrative skills by working
as a summer intern in Government’s
Human Resource Department. Deshay
has been Student Association President
as well as a member of the Bermuda
Youth Parliament. Outside of school her
extra curricular pursuits include Tae-
Kwon-Do, basketball and swimming.
Deshay understands that “international
business supports the local job sectors,”
the combination of which, she
believes “makes for a perfect working
relationship.” And she is confident
that she “will become a vital part of
that relationship in the future.”
Lamar Caines
Lamar is a graduate of Berkeley Institute
and Seneca College, where he obtained
his Ontario Advanced Diploma in
Business Administration and Human
Resource Management. For the last
year he has been attending Ryerson
University, where he is studying towards
a Bachelor of Commerce degree with a
major in Human Resource Management
and a minor in finance. Lamar is an avid
cricket player having played for both
the Warwick Workmen’s Club and the
Bermuda Cricket League on the Under
23 National Team. He is described by
his cricket coach as having “represented
the true meaning of the sport of cricket
when it is often said it changes boys to
men.” Having been exposed to various
departments as a student employee at
Butterfield Bank has helped fuel Lamar’s
interest in the financial services and
he strongly believes that international
business gives Bermuda “the opportunity
to contribute something of significance
to the world economy.”
Shakir Darrell
Shakir has attended the University of
Sussex, Albert College and the University
of Buckingham. He plans to continue
his course of study at the University of
Sussex in LLB Law with the intention
of becoming an In–house Counsel in
international business. In pursuit of his
goal he has successfully completed his
Preliminary Legal Studies and has been a
Legal Apprentice at Juris Law Chambers
for the last four years, where his mentor
describes him as an “extremely intelligent
and socially conscious young Bermudian
man.” Availing himself of every
opportunity during vacations to earn what
he can to assist with his education, Shakir
still finds time to enjoy athletics pursuits
such as tennis and skiing. His high level of
maturity and self-confidence are evident
when he states that he is both “prepared
and willing to accept the challenges he
will continue to face during his second
year of law school and looks forward to an
incredibly successful career.”
Sakinah Dill
Sakinah, is a mature student who
recently graduated from Bermuda College
with an Associate Degree in Business
Administration with merit. She plans to
attend the University of Nottingham in
the fall where she will pursue a Bachelor’s
Degree in Finance. Described admirably
by one of her lecturers as a person with
unlimited “intellectual prowess and
fortitude,” Sakinah has been able to
achieve academic success whilst holding
a full-time job and single handedly raising
a family. Despite all of this she has still
found time to be involved in the Trojan’s
Track Club and Amnesty International
Bermuda. Sakinah understands that a
Finance Degree will provide her with
the valuable skills required to contribute
to international business. She believes
that “one of the most important keys to
success is an education;” a lesson she will
no doubt pass on to her daughters.
Naeemah Fubler
Naeemah, a recent graduate of Warwick
Academy, will be attending Dalhousie
University in the fall where she will
be studying towards her Bachelor’s of
Commerce Co-op Degree. Described as a
“super young lady who has such potential
in her chosen field,” Naeemah’s goal is
to obtain a Master’s Degree in Human
Resource Management. She has been a
candy striper, a National Trust Volunteer,
and has participated in various sports
including netball, football, tennis, and
as a member of the Mid-Island Striders
Track Team. Naeemah describes herself
as “someone who enjoys interacting with
various groups of people,” and believes
that “several aspects of the international
business sector are appealing to her and
support both her career and personal
aspirations.”
Allison Grenfell
Allison, having achieved honors in each
year of high school, recently graduated
from Bermuda High School with
the maximum number of GCSEs, an
IB certificate and an average above
90%. She will be attending University
of Toronto in the fall to pursue a
Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce and
intends to return to Bermuda “to work
in international business industry and
volunteer in community activities.” Her
commitment to community is evident
through her involvement in the Youth
Net mentoring scheme. She also served as
school prefect, a member of the volleyball
team and assistant coach to the BHS
middle school volleyball team. Described
as “an exemplary school citizen,” Allison
is confident she will find a job that suits
her skills and personal interests because
of “the diverse nature of the international
business community in Bermuda.”

Omar James
Omar, a graduate of Berkeley Institute
and a Rotary Exchange Student in Japan,
will be attending Temple University in
the fall where he plans to study towards a
Bachelor’s Degree in Information Science
and Technology. One of his professors at
Bermuda College, where he has most
recently been enrolled, noted that he
was always glad to see Omar’s name
on his class roster as he knew he would
have “a go to student” in the class. While
studying in Japan, Omar was awarded a
3rd place medal and ceremonial bamboo
fue (brush) in the Mainichi Newspaper
Calligraphy Competition. He has also
trained as a Police Constable and
received his CPR training through St.
John’s Ambulance Brigade. Omar has
successfully participated in workshops
hosted by CURE on understanding race
relations. He believes that international
business “provides a standard of excellence
that is recognized all over the world, and
one that he hopes to live up to.”

Laura Norman
Laura has been enrolled in Edinburgh
University for the last year, having
impressively graduated from Bermuda
High School as a Prefect with an IB
certificate and an average that never
dropped below 90%. Laura received
numerous awards for her academic
achievements as well as the Duke of
Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold
awards. Described as “an outwardly quiet
student with a great sense of adventure,”
Laura was equally active outside of
school, teaching swimming and taking
Ballet and Pointe to an advanced level
as a member of the Somerset School of
Dance for twelve years. Laura plans to
continue her studies in pursuit of an
MA (Hons) in Business Studies and to
eventually become a successful business
woman in order to help “ensure that
international business continues to
thrive on the island.”
Charles O'Brien
Charles will be entering into his
Sophomore Year at Carleton University
in the fall where he is pursuing a
Bachelor of Commerce Degree, majoring
in Marketing. Charles graduated
from Georgian College on the Dean’s
List with a Diploma in Mechanical
Engineering Automotive Technology
before deciding his talents were
better suited for a career in business.
While at college, Charles was the first
international student selected to study at
the Canadian Institute for International
Studies (CIFIS) in Mohali, India as
part of a student exchange program.
His demonstrated leadership ability is
readily apparent from his position at
college as an International Resident
Advisor. He has received numerous
awards through out his academic
history to include Prefect of the Year
and was selected to participate in the
4th Annual Leadership Conference.
Charles creativity is evidenced by the
fact that his artwork was featured in
an overseas youth art exhibition. He
is described as “a very positive and
respectful young man who is working
hard to achieve his goal of pursuing a
professional career within Bermuda’s
business community.”

Sherika Parfitt
Sherika recently graduated from
Berkeley Institute with the third highest
GPA in senior three and where one
professor described her participation
in his class as “superior.” Sherika plans
on attending New England Institute
of Technology in the fall in order to
obtain a degree in Engineering Software
Technology as well as Multimedia and
Web Design Technology. Her career goal
is to become an Application Consultant
where she will assist clients in areas such
as implementation planning, business
case development and performance
measurement. Sherika has been a
member of her school’s soccer team and
the Vernon Temple Dance Ministry as
well as a Youth Net Peer mentor. She
believes that ABIC award scholars should
“convey leadership skills, be modest and
academically focused yet have a well
being for others.” She is confident that
she possesses these traits.
Johnae Perinchief
Johnae, a graduate of Berkeley Institute
& Bermuda College, will be entering
into her senior year at Temple University
where she is pursuing a Bachelor’s
Degree in Business Administration,
majoring in Accounting. While at
Berkeley, she was responsible for
coordinating and organizing their first
business corporation, MTB Corp Group
(Motivated Team Berkeley). Through
her leadership this group was able to
solicit funds from an international
company and travel to New York
for the purpose of exploring careers
and educational institutions in the
financial industry. Johnae is a member
of her Church’s choir and the Student
Organization for Caribbean Awareness
(S.O.C.A). She has volunteered her
time serving meals at Whispering Hope
Nursing Home and is eager to continue
her community service upon graduation
by joining the charity Big Brothers &
Sisters. Described as “an extremely
focused, well liked, articulate student,”
Johnae adheres to the adage “leave no
stone unturned,” in pursuit of her goal
in becoming a successful CPA.
Alfred Roberts
Alfred, a graduate of Cedarbridge
Academy, will be attending Kent
State University in the fall to pursue a
Bachelor of Science Degree in Business
Management with a minor in Pre-Law.
Focused on achieving his goals of obtaining
a higher education whilst taking on the
role of single parent, Alfred has worked
the last four years in the reinsurance
industry as both a Claims Administrator
and Financial Assistant. He remains
very involved in his church serving as
an Armour Bearer (Personal Aide) to his
Pastor, a singer on the Praise Ensemble,
a dancer/choreographer for the dance
team as well as an Events Coordinator.
He was selected by the Bermuda
Regiment to train as a Cadet Officer and
was a cast member of the local “Dream
Girls” Production, which received raved
reviews. After finishing university, Alfred
plans on attending graduate school and
returning to Bermuda in order to “fulfill
one of his greatest desires of giving back
to the island.”
Natasha Shabdeen
Natasha, a dedicated mother of three
has been a full time student at Alabama
A&M University where she has remained
on the Dean’s List since 2005, as a
member of the Delta Mu Delta Honor
Society. Next Spring she will obtain her
Bachelor of Science Degree in Business
Management after which she intends
to pursue a Master’s Degree in Human
Resource Management. Natasha has
worked in the Magistrates’ Court as
Secretary to the Administrative officer,
where she was described by one co worker
as someone “who enjoys a challenge and
always puts one hundred percent effort
into any task that she undertakes.”
Successfully able to juggle her family
time and education, placing equal value
on both, Natasha understands “the
importance of international business to
the growth, survival, and quality of life
for Bermudians.”

Idris Smith
Idris recently graduated from Saltus
Grammar School where one professor
described him as “a well rounded student
who starts his academic day on time and
well dressed for the occasion.” Idris will be
attending Kingston University in England
where he will study towards a degree in
Business Information Technology in
order to obtain a more comprehensive
knowledge of computer networking
and business. An avid sportsman, Idris
played cricket as a member of his school’s
cricket team as well as in the competitive
community league for Warwick
Workmen’s Club for the past 6 years. He is
also a member of the Bermuda Junior Golf
Association, the Bermuda Cadet Corps
and the Bermuda Akido Association
where he is just four tests from a black
belt. Once he completes his education
Idris plans to “return to Bermuda to
dedicate the skills and knowledge he has
acquired in order to assist in his country’s
advancement.”
Zoe Smith
Zoe recently graduated from Berkeley
Institute, where she remained on the
honor list for the last 4 years and served
as Head Girl. She will be entering Mount
Allison University in the fall where she
will pursue a Bachelor of Commerce
degree. Zoe was nominated for the Most
Outstanding Teen in the Leadership
category as well as the Global Student
Leader Conference. She received the
highest recommendation from her
Principal, who described her as “an
outstanding young role model” who she
has “confidently called upon to represent
the school on numerous occasions.”
Zoe served as a member of the Future
Business Leaders Club, peer tutor and
as an executive member of her school’s
recycling team. Outside of school she has
been dancing for 12 years and is a member
of the Bermuda Softball Association.
Zoe’s career goal is to enter into the
international business arena as a Risk
Analyst. She admits that “international
business has impacted her in a positive
way and looks forward to working in the
field in the future.”
Rojon Trimm
Rojon having graduated from Warwick
Academy with an IB certificate, will
be entering into his Sophomore year
at St. Francis Xavier University in the
fall where he is pursuing a Bachelor of
Business Administration Degree with a
major in Accounting. Rojon’s athleticism
is evident in his extensive involvement
in various basketball leagues including
his university’s varsity team, Bermuda
Christian Basketball League, the Bermuda
College League and his participation in
the Indian Summer Basketball Camp for
four years, where he was crowned “The
Best Overall Camp Participant.” He has
also volunteered his time at the Aquarium
and as a mentor at Paget Primary for
Youth Net. Rojon sees Bermuda as “being
lost without international business,” and
is confident that he will prove to be an
invaluable asset once he has finished his
college education.
Jahvon Washington
Jahvon, a graduate of Berkeley Institute,
is entering into his Junior Year at St.
John’s University where he plans to
continue his studies with a focus on
Risk Management and Insurance. His
career goal is to become an international
underwriter for a global insurance
company. Jahvon currently sits on the
Student Programming Board, is a member
of the St. John’s Mentoring Program and
has volunteered for the St. Nick’s Men’s
Shelter. He recently completed a summer
internship program in London through
the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance
Studies and has interned at various
international companies during his
school breaks, the most recent of which
is with AIG within their Excess Casualty
Underwriting Group. The Senior Vice
President described Jahvon to be “a
diligent worker, punctual, a team player
and willing to learn.” Jahvon believes
“there is a need for local professionals
to fill voids within the hierarchy of the
corporate ladder and take businesses to
higher levels.” He is confident that he is
up to the task.
Kijaun Wilkinson
Kijaun, graduated with merit from
Saltus Grammar School and has been
attending Temple University for the
past year where he is pursuing a degree
in Risk Management and Business
Studies with the goal of entering into
the re-insurance industry. Kijaun was a
member of the Bermuda National Track
and Field Team, representing the island
in three Carifta Games and a member of
the Devonshire Colts soccer club where
he was voted MVP. He is currently a
part of the Temple University Track
and Field Team. Kijaun has also had
time to give back to the community by
volunteering for a group called “Care
Computers” where he helped primary
school students after school with
homework. One of his professors admits
that it is “refreshing to see a teenager of
today with such a well defined sense of
value and purpose, who uses his talents
for constructive ends.” Kijaun believes
that in order to be successful in business
“one should not limit themselves to
small tasks but to look at what is needed
in Bermuda’s market.”
Bryce Williams
Bryce has been attending Andrews
University for the last year where he
is pursuing a dual major in Spanish
Studies and Political Science with a
minor in French. As part of his degree
he will be attending college in Spain
for the upcoming year. Described by
one of his professors as “a talented
linguist,” Bryce’s goal is to obtain his
post graduate certification in French and
Spanish translation and interpretation,
in order to become a translator of legal
documentation. While in high school,
Bryce served as a prefect and member
of the school’s full orchestra as well
as having participated in a number of
school productions; both as performer
and assistant director. He was awarded
first place in the Alpha Beautillion
Competition; a recognition for
excellence in public speaking, debate and
musical ability. Also an avid sportsman,
Bryce is currently a member of both his
university’s swim and gymnastics teams.
Bryce wants to “create awareness about
the importance of languages in Bermuda’s
international business community.”
