The awards luncheon was held on Wednesday, July 25, 2007 at the Harbourfront Restaurant. The awards are now in their 28th year and over 50 applications from students were received.

David Ezekiel, ABIC Chairman, introduced The Hon. Derrick V. Burgess, JP, MP Minister of Labour and Immigration, who was the guest speaker for the event.

The number of scholarships awarded this year was 21 and a record total of $575,000 was raised for the program.

ABIC is grateful to all the international companies that donated to this year’s campaign and a special thanks to those companies who generously sponsored the Corporate Named Awards.

 

 

The 2007 Awards Recipients are:

Chanté Anderson
Chanté has been accepted at the University of Waterloo, Canada in the fall where she will pursue a Bachelor of Economics with a concentration in Finance. Chanté would like to work in risk management or accounting as a Chartered Accountant. In her spare time Chanté volunteers at St. Monica’s House and plays non-competitive squash. Chanté recalls the words of an English teacher in high school who said, “the most satisfying thing we could do in life is to invest in ourselves.” Chanté is motivated in life by the hardworking nature of her parents, her desire to lead a productive and gratifying life and her commitment to educating herself.

 

 

Alex-André Bassett
Alex-André has been accepted into Dalhousie University in the fall where he will be studying toward a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. Alex-André recently graduated from Saltus Grammar School where he obtained ten IGCSEs. Described as having great academic potential, some of Alex-André’s interests are boy scouts, Young Enterprise, Debate Club, Rogue Traders and the Astronomy Club. Mature, hard working and committed to the community, he believes that international business is of major importance to Bermuda. “International business makes Bermuda more diverse and relevant in the world scope of business thus increasing the knowledge of Bermuda as a whole.”

 

 

Tshaloni Best
After having completed the advanced placement course at Saltus, Tshaloni is currently studying toward an Honours Law degree at Kingston University, London. A past managing director of Saltus Young Enterprise Scheme, some of Tshaloni’s extra curricular activities include reading clubs, mentoring, tutoring, chairing the prom committee and being a member of the Peer Mediation Group. Upon completion of her educational endeavours, Tshaloni intends to return to Bermuda “in order to become an active member of the business community, in hopes of gaining further knowledge and experience and to become an asset to the international

 

 

Taniesha Brangman
Taniesha, having recently graduated from the Bermuda College, has been accepted at Temple University, Pennsylvania in the fall to the School of Business and Management. Taniesha, who is described as good at math and Spanish, intends to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting and then obtain her accounting designations. Some of her interests are sports, school band, choir, participating on the graduation committee and in the majorettes. A dedicated, hard worker, Taniesha feels that “giving me this award will be worth-while because it will be an investment that will pay off.”

 

 

Ryan Cabral
Ryan, who is a recent graduate from Saltus, has earned a placement at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia in the fall, where he will be studying toward a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He has gained top marks in both international and local examinations. Ryan’s extracurricular activities include swimming, cross country, track and field, soccer, Project Ride and volunteer community work. Ryan’s goals include “returning to Bermuda and taking advantage of the incredible career opportunities provided by international business, as well as working as a Chartered Accountant in one of the many businesses on the island.”

 

 

Michelle Conklin
Michelle is a recent graduate of The Bermuda High School for Girls, where her excellent grades and consistently high academic achievement have gained her a placement at Wilfred Laurier University, Waterloo in the fall. Michelle, who has managed to successfully link her environmental interests to international business, will be studying environmental conservation. She enjoys netball, ballet, swimming, scuba, and is enrolled in a marine science internship. Michelle has a keen interest in how climate changes will affect our island and our society in years to come. “With sustainable development as a key component to our island’s vision for the future, I see the need to balance sound environmental practices with business growth and infrastructural development.”

 

 

Tiffany Darrell
Tiffany, who is a recent graduate of Bermuda College, has been accepted into Kingston University, London where she will study toward a Bachelor (Honours) in Business Studies. Tiffany intends to become a Financial Analyst and is very knowledgeable about international business. She enjoys netball and is a member of the Bermuda College Student Government, Literary Society and is a College Ambassador. Tiffany believes that diligence, dedication and sacrifice are the three main aspects of success. Part of Tiffany’s enthusiasm is fuelled by the fact that, “as international business grows and with more than 10,000 companies registered in Bermuda, we are a part of the global marketplace.”

 

 

Kyle Ferreira
Kyle is a recent graduate of Mt. Saint Agnes Academy, where he achieved excellent grades. His performance has earned him a place at The Wilfred Laurier University, Waterloo in the fall. Kyle will study toward an Honours in Business Administration degree and wants to become a Financial Planner, “which will allow me to help to secure the financial future of my fellow Bermudians and to give back to the people of Bermuda.” Kyle’s hobbies are community service, volleyball, soccer, basketball and badminton. He has also achieved the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

 

 

Treasa Fubler
Treasa is currently entering her senior year at Clark Atlanta University where she is studying towards a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration. Treasa, who is very aware of issues facing international business, is interested in Human Resources, Hotel Management and Finance, any one of which will provide her with exposure to the international business market. Her interests are mentoring autistic children and she is a member of the Clark University COSA. Treasa was driven to, “leave my country (to pursue further education) by the large number of career opportunities which I know would be available upon graduation.”

 

 

Atheá Jackson
Atheá who is a very well spoken young lady, has recently graduated from the Bermuda High School International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Atheá’s academic performance has earned her a place at York University, Toronto where she will study toward a Bachelor of Administration degree. Her goal is to become a Certified Management Accountant. She enjoys volunteering and has volunteered at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, The St. Paul A.M.E. Child Care Centre and is a past member of the Menuhin Youth Foundation Orchestra. Atheá believes that, “international business provides a wider variety of employment opportunities for employees than the local sector and that it is a great avenue for promotion and exposure for Bermuda.”

 

 

Natasha Khan
Natasha is currently studying at Concordia University, Montreal towards a Bachelor’s degree in History. Natasha’s goal is to become a lawyer, return home amply qualified for success and to take her position in the community. Natasha enjoys sports including gymnastics, netball, track & field, kick-boxing, basketball and Pilates. She is a volunteer, mentor, tutor and is a member of the Menuhin Youth Orchestra. “International business provides a number of career opportunities for the future, giving me the opportunity to be based locally but to forge international connections and allowing me to live out my dream of having an international career, while still living in Bermuda.”

 

 

Scott Kennedy
Scott, who is a recent graduate of Cedarbridge Academy with Principal’s Honours, has been accepted into the Bachelor of Administrative Studies at York University, Toronto in the fall. Scott was also Head Boy at CedarBridge Academy. Scott’s interests are varsity basketball, karate and he is a member of the Alpha Beautillion. His goal is to become a Certified Financial Accountant and ultimately a successful investor and entrepreneur. Scott’s observation is that, “our nation is a leader for annual GDP growth in the entire world. This is significant since it shows that even such a small nation can have a major impact in the world’s economy.”

 

 

Olivia Riley
Olivia, who recently graduated from The Bermuda High School for Girls, has been accepted into the Bachelor of Commerce program at the University of Virginia in the fall. Olivia’s aspirations include a career in accountancy, business management/administration and becoming a Chartered Accountant. Olivia enjoys netball, softball, ballet, Pointe, hip-hop, jazz, modern dance and choir. She volunteers with Masterworks Foundation and The Salvation Army’s “Feed the Homeless” program. Olivia believes that, “not only does international business in Bermuda generate enormous revenues and create a diverse, rich culture, but it also provides philanthropy and contributes to the education of Bermudians.”

 

 

Karen Robinson
Karen is presently studying at St. Thomas University, New Brunswick, Canada. She is studying towards a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and a double minor in Business and Sociology. Upon completion, Karen intends to return to Bermuda and continue her studies at the Bermuda Insurance Institute so that she can become a successful Bermudian woman. Karen enjoys music, volleyball, is a volunteer at Westmeath, Meals on Wheels, the Dame Marjorie Bean Hope Academy and has achieved the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze and Silver Awards. It is her belief that “new experiences with different parts of business and numerous cultures are a very rewarding and important part of what makes international business such a commodity to Bermuda.”

 

 

Vanessa Smith
Vanessa is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) degree at McMaster University, Ontario. Upon graduation she plans to pursue a Chartered Accountant designation with one of the major local accounting firms. Vanessa is a member of the McMaster HIV/AIDs Awareness Club, Degroote Accounting Association, Degroote Finance Association, The Golden Key Honor Society and the Bright Temple Liturgical Dance and Step Teams. Vanessa has an excellent understanding of international business and believes that, “attracting businesses of a high caliber enhances Bermuda’s position in the global market. International business has helped to maintain the economic prosperity of the country and must be maintained to ensure that Bermuda remains a first class jurisdiction for global commerce.”

 

 

Melissa Spurling
Melissa has recently graduated from The Bermuda High School for Girls, where her excellent academic performance has earned her a place at The Wilfred Laurier University, Waterloo in the fall. Melissa will enter the Honours Business Administration Program. She self admittedly has a voracious desire to discover the opportunities in academia that await beyond the green gates of BHS. Melissa enjoys ballet, jazz, violin, tennis, Peernet and has held an after-school club at Somersfield Academy. It is Melissa’s observation that, “the most important benefit of international business is that we receive the benefit of a cosmopolitan workforce, with an injection of new ideas, different cultures and fresh viewpoints from the overseas workers.”

 

 

Donita Stevens
Donita is currently studying at Don Quijote Preparatory School and graduated from the Saltus Grammar School program in 2006. Her consistent excellence in academics has earned her placement at Temple University, Pennsylvania in the School of Business and Management for the fall 2007 semester. Donita intends to pursue a Bachelor of Actuary Science and become an Actuary. She enjoys candy-striping, netball, mentoring, tutoring, is a student council representative and has participated in Outward Bound and the Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Donita feels that, “it is my duty to return to Bermuda after my studies and contribute to my island in a field which has a high demand for Bermudians.”

 

 

Uthmani Talbot
Uthmani is a recent graduate of the Berkeley Institute, where his exemplary achievements earned him acceptance into Old Dominion University, Virginia in the fall. He will study Computer Engineering with an Accounting minor. Uthmani participates in a host of extra-curricular activities which include volunteering, mentoring, sports and scuba diving. He was a member of Berkeley’s Student Council, the Debate Team, Reporter for Youth News, and participated in the Seniors 2 Seniors Technology Program which teaches computer skills to seniors. Uthmani’s ambition is to work as a Finance Accountant within the international business sector. Upon completing his degree, Uthmani intends to, “return to Bermuda to give back to the community that has helped to mold me and in doing so I will be doing my part to help international business help Bermuda.”

 

 

Troy Trott
Troy is a mature student whose excellent academic performance has earned him placement at the New England Institute of Technology, Rhode Island in the fall, where he will pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology Networking. Troy has attained an Associate of Science degree in Information Technology and believes that in order to reap rewards you must work hard. “I am a very optimistic, determined and goal focused individual who believes that it is never too late to achieve personal or professional goals. I believe in leading by example and will show others the importance of pursuing their dreams.”

 

 

Lorenzo Whitehurst
Lorenzo is a recent graduate of the Bermuda College where he was on the Deputy Dean’s List. He has been accepted into the School of Business and Management at Temple University, Pennsylvania in the fall, where he will pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science. Lorenzo’s extra-curricular activities include coaching basketball at CedarBridge, where he teaches respect, teamwork, and demands high moral standards from the students. He is also the Captain of the Christian Basketball League. Lorenzo’s goal is to eventually, “become the CEO of my own insurance company and, in turn, contribute to

 

 

Daniel Woods
Daniel recently graduated from the Saltus Grammar School and was on the Headmaster’s List. His academic achievements have earned him a place at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia in the fall, where he will pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce. Daniel plans to become a Chartered Accountant and is determined to succeed in all of his pursuits. Among Daniel’s extra-curricular activities are teaching Sunday School, YouthNet Mentor, an active member of the Prom Committee, various sports and a member of the Devonshire Colts U-18 Squad. Upon his return to the island, Daniel plans to, “work in my field of study for a local firm and hopefully move up the ladder and eventually make partner.”
