The awards luncheon was held on Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at La Coquille Restaurant. The awards are now in their 26th year and over 50 applications from students were received.

David Holland, ABIC Director and Chairman of the ABICEA, introduced Phillip Butterfield, CEO Bank of Bermuda, HSBC Group, who was the guest speaker for the event.

The number of scholarships awarded this year was 18 and a record total of $518,000 was raised for the program. ABIC is grateful to all the international companies that donated to this year's campaign and a special thanks to those companies who generously sponsored the Corporate Named Awards.

 

 

The 2005 Awards Recipients are:

Jennifer Beech
Jennifer will be attending Endicott College in the fall, where she will be pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing. An avid sportsperson, Jennifer represented Bermuda in the U21 Field Hockey Team Junior Pan American Games in Puerto Rico, was nominated for Teen Services sports female of the year and recognised as the Denton Hurdle Middle School Girls winner. While in high school she was appointed Deputy Head Girl and participated in several conferences including the “Be About it Drug Free” Eastern Conference in Rhode Island. Jennifer is a Youth Net Volunteer, a member of the PRIDE Drug Free Group, Young Enterprise and the Student Council. After graduating with a degree in Marketing, Jennifer says it would be her “privilege to return to Bermuda and contribute to the success of international business.”

 

 

Kristina Crockwell
Kristina is currently attending St. Mary’s University where she is studying toward a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, majoring in Accounting. She recently graduated with top honours from CompuCollege in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she obtained her Diploma in Accounting, Payroll and Business Administration. Due to her high academic achievements she is eligible to receive the Supervisory Management Certificate from the Canadian Institute of Management in addition to the Payroll Supervisory Certificate from the Canadian Payroll Association. Kristina has demonstrated strong leadership abilities as Head Girl at Clearwater Middle School and a member of Cedarbridge’s Future Leaders of Bermuda. With a knack for dealing with figures and financial records, it has been Kristina’s goal since the age of thirteen to become a Chartered Accountant and “one of the top leading women in business.”

 

 

Krystle Desilva
Krystle is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration Degree programme at Acadia University where she is an integral member of the Acadia Dance Collective competitive team, having helped them earn numerous awards and recognitions. She is also a Chase Court Floor representative and a member of the Acadia Business Society and Acadia International Gospel Choir. While in high school, Krystle maintained honours and was awarded the Headmaster’s Scholarship. She has sailed on the Pogoria in “Tall Ships 2000” and coordinated Bingo sessions at the Matilda Smith Nursing Home. Krystle, whose academic interests include accounting, mathematics and actuarial science believes that “a career in international business will continuously challenge her and establish opportunities for further growth and development.”

 

 

Jamari Douglas
Jamari will be attending Morehouse College in the fall where he will be pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree majoring in English and minoring in Business Studies. While in high school Jamari was voted as the Most Outstanding Teen in Bermuda in the category of Leadership. Having studied in Fukouka, Japan as a Rotary Exchange Student, Jamari is fluent in Japanese. He was awarded the Paget Lions award for Outstanding Student Council Leadership and the Student Leadership Scholarship Award from CD&P. While at Bermuda College, where he recently obtained his Associates in Arts Degree, Jamari was chosen as School Ambassador and participated in the “Men’s Speak Forum”, on the B-Tech Committee and the United Nations Club, where he traveled to Edinburgh to speak on the Africa Union. Jamari, who has had the dream of attending Morehouse College since the age of 10, intends to pursue a career in Corporate Communications, Marketing and World Business Protocol and says he is very grateful for the sponsorship provided to him by international companies throughout the years.

 

 

Estina Francis
Estina has been accepted into the Bachelor of Science programme where she will major in Business Administration with a focus in Accounting. An exceptional student in high school having graduated with honours, Estina was elected Head Girl and achieved many outstanding awards for her academic performance and community activities, some of which include the Youth Parliament Award and the Teen Services Award for Spiritual Leadership. Estina, an avid lover of music, is a very accomplished pianist, singer and song writer and is one of the musicians in her church. She also recently graduated from Bermuda College with an Associates Degree in Business Administration and near perfect GPA. Estina’s career plan for the future is to become a Chartered Accountant, to work for an exempt company, give back to the community and ultimately to start her own business which she hopes will involve her passion for music.

 

 

Derrick Hendrickson
Derrick will be entering his Senior Year at Oakwood College where he is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration Systems, with a concentration in Information Technology. He graduated high school with honours and was a proud member of the Bermuda delegation at the Global Young Leader’s Summit in both Australia and Europe. Derrick has served his church as a member of both the Inspirational Choir and the Church Treasury. Currently at college he is a member of Phi Beta Lambda (Business Club) and OC3 (Computer Club) and during his summers he plays locally in the Summer Basketball League at Bermuda College. Derrick plans to pursue an MBA degree and return to Bermuda to work for a company in their IT Department, giving him the much needed exposure to eventually start his own IT consultancy firm.

 

 

Jokeita Henry
Jokeita is currently attending the New England Institute of Technology, where she is completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology. Having completed her Associates Degree in Arts & Science at Bermuda College and her Associates Degree in Computer Information Systems Technology at NEIT, Jokeita is well on her way to realising her goal of graduating with a degree and returning to Bermuda to obtain a stable position in a leading organisation. Able to maintain her studies while raising a young daughter, Jokeita serves as a positive role model for today’s youth of what can be achieved if you put your mind to it.

 

 

Whitnii Levon
Whitnii will be attending The University of Toronto in the fall where she will be studying Political Science and Government Management. Having achieved high academic honours throughout high school, Whitnii was awarded a two year partial scholarship to attend the Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong, where she recently completed an intense International Baccalaureate Programme and traveled to Thailand to help Tsunami victims. With a love for acting and dance, Whitnii has performed lead roles in various school drama productions and studied dance at the Broadway Dance Centre in New York. With a background in law and government management and an interest in Education, Whitnii intends to use her skills to “ensure the stability of Bermuda’s Government and that future generations of Bermudian students have the ability to experience the world and have access to the very best education and cultural resources available.”

 

 

Stephanie Lima
Stephanie will be entering St. John’s University in the fall, where she will be pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree majoring in Risk Management and Insurance. While in high school she achieved academic success as an honour student and dedicated her time through a variety of activities which included Student Council Treasurer, House Captain, cheerleading and Tom Peter’s Concept “U” Leadership group. A well rounded student, Stephanie successfully balances her academics and extracurricular activities with community service by volunteering for the SPCA and Lorraine Rest Home. Grateful for the financial sacrifices her father has made towards her education thus far, Stephanie intends to continue to work hard in achieving her goal of graduating from college and becoming an invaluable asset to the island’s insurance industry.

 

 

Colina Outerbridge
Colina is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration programme at Acadia University where she is concentrating her studies in Accounting and Spanish. After graduating from high school, Colina obtained her Certificate in Bookkeeping from Bermuda College and entered the workforce. A self-supporting, determined, young woman, she used this time to further her education and earn credits towards her Bachelor’s degree by enrolling in an independent study programme through Syracuse University. Since attending Acadia, Colina has been very involved in extra curricular activities some of which include being a member of the Business Society, a Representative for the Women’s Resource Centre and a proud member of the International Gospel Choir. She also volunteers her time for a teen shelter and as a member of Random Acts of Kindness. Colina’s goal is to become a Chartered Accountant and “to play an active role in the community, inspiring others as she herself has been inspired.”

 

 

Sherkyta Roberts
Sherkyta will be attending North Carolina AT&T State University in the fall where she will be pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, majoring in Accounting. An honour roll student throughout high school, Sherkyta recently obtained her Associates Degree in Business Studies from Bermuda College where she maintained a laudable GPA. She was nominated for Outstanding Teen Awards in the categories of Most Progress and Scholastics and participated in the Bermuda Junior Service League Debating Championship for two years. Sherkyta, a highly disciplined individual, has been able to balance her academic career and a part-time job, whilst also volunteering two hours every week to Agape House. Sherkyta’s future career goal is to become a Certified Accountant and work for an international company, working her way up the ladder to the respectable position of Financial Controller.

 

 

Kelly-Anne Robinson
Kelly-Anne will be attending Brock University in the fall, where she will enroll in the Honours Bachelor of Business Administration programme. While in high school she was recognised as the Deputy Principle’s Honour Student, elected Student Prefect and was awarded recognition in various essay competitions. Last year, Kelly-Anne was chosen to be the Student Representative and Speaker for Bermuda 2004 Tourism Launching. Actively involved in her church youth group, she has also volunteered her time at the Physical Abuse Centre and Matilda Smith Williams Senior’s Home whilst also maintaining a part-time position as Head Administrator for a construction company. Kelly-Anne chooses to live her life based on the quote, “until the bar is raised to the unexpected, I must persevere.” It is her goal to obtain a Master’s Degree in Management and “to become a highly respected manager of her own business consultancy firm in Bermuda, raising the bar in the business industry.”

 

 

Erika Suber
Erika is currently enrolled in the Richard J. Fox School of Business Management at Temple University where she is pursuing a degree in Actuarial Science. An enthusiast of the French language she won a place to a French immersion camp in Montreal through a local language school competition and recently completed her International Baccalaureate at the Centre of International de Valbonne, in France. Whilst in France, she participated in the Model United Nations Debate Conference, where she represented her team on world issues and policies. Erika consistently obtained honours throughout high school, was elected Prefect and House Captain by her peers and participated in a variety of activities in and out of school including army cadets, netball, dance, as a member of a local hockey league and church youth group. Erika’s goal is “to pursue a career in insurance because of the limitless opportunities and possibilities for young Bermudians.”

 

 

Jonathan Suter
Jonathan is currently attending the Victoria University of Wellington, Victoria in New Zealand where he is pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in International Business and Management, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish and Mandarin. While in high school, Jonathan was elected School Prefect and was a member of the Bermuda National Youth Council and the Bermuda National Debate Team. With a keen interest in the Arts he plays the cello, guitar and piano, has learnt Latin/Ballroom and Scottish Highland dancing as well as participated in local pantomimes. Ultimately Jonathan would like to work in the philanthropic arm of an organisation, a passion which has grown since working at the XL Foundation and through reading many articles on Corporate Social Responsibility. He feels that “the business world is an excellent place to begin to do some moving and shaking, so that people are not lost in the quest for profits.”

 

 

Shantarrae Talbot
Shantarrae will be attending St. Mary’s University in the fall where she will be studying toward a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Finance. An honour roll student throughout high school, Shantarrae also graduated from Bermuda College with an Associates Degree with merit in Business Administration. Outside of the classroom she was an active member of the Youth Net programme, where she served as a mentor for young children. She was also a member of the St. John’s Ambulance Brigade having been fully certified in both CPR and First Aid. Shantarrae was also involved in a self taught programme where she acquired skills in sign language. During the last year she has balanced two jobs in order to save money to further her education, has actively continued her volunteer work and enrolled in on line classes to gain additional credits. After completion of her studies abroad, Shantarrae plans to return to the island and “contribute to making Bermuda a multipurpose place for business and pleasure.”

 

 

Renee Taylor
Renee will be entering St. John’s University in the fall, where she will be pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Risk Management and Insurance. Noted by the faculty as a valuable asset to the student body, Renee dedicated her time to her high school through a variety of activities including the Glee Club and the Environment Club. She has also volunteered for many worthy causes, the most recent one being Summer Haven. Respected and well regarded by peers for her gentleness and generosity, Renee’s goal after graduating with her degree, is to earn her Juris Doctorate and return to Bermuda and work as an insurance lawyer.

 

 

Kevin Warner
Kevin will be enrolling in the Bachelor of Commerce degree programme at St. Mary’s University in the fall. An honour student throughout high school, he received numerous awards for outstanding attendance and behaviour, as well as achievement in Design & Technology, Chemistry, Health and Business Studies. Kevin recently graduated from the Bermuda College with an Associates Degree in Business Administration and during his time there he had the opportunity to attend the 14th Annual World Conference for Gifted and Talented Children, in Spain. While enrolled as a full-time student he commendably managed to alternate his time between his studies and working part-time, while also playing football for both Pembroke Hamilton Club and the College team. Upon completion of his Bachelor’s Degree, Kevin hopes to obtain his Master’s Degree in Insurance and return to the island to work as an Underwriter.

 

 

Meishka Zuill
Meishka will be attending Acadia University in the fall where she will be pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. While in high school, Meishka represented her school at the Bermuda Junior Service League National Debate Tournament and at a conference for Global Peace and Tolerance sponsored by Friends of the UN. She also served as a member of the Student Council, and was elected Senior Prefect. Outside of school she enjoys dance as a member of United Dance Productions and has attained the rank of Ranger of the Bermuda Girl Guide Association. Other accomplishments include completion of the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, a credit in the Young Enterprise scheme and certification in First Aid and CPR. With the continued emotional and financial support from her father, Meishka’s plan is to become a Certified Financial Analyst and “render her services to the local business community.”
