The awards luncheon was held on Tuesday,
July 6, 2004 at La Coquille Restaurant. The awards are now in their 25th
year and a record number of applications from students were received.
Peter Everson, ABIC Director and Chamber of
the Commerce Vice President , introduced Michael Morrison, Vice Chairman
of Allied World Assurance company,
Ltd., who was the guest speaker for the event.
The number of scholarships awarded this year was 23
and a total of $480,000 was raised for the program. ABIC is grateful to
all the international
companies that donated to this year's campaign and a special thanks to those
companies
who generously sponsored the Corporate Named Awards.
The 2004 Awards Recipients are:
Nishanthi Bailey – Montpelier RE
Nishanthi is currently attending Spelman College where she is pursing degrees
in both Education and Spanish. While in high school Nishanthi was appointed
Head Girl, placed in the Top 3% of her year and graduated with Triple Honours.
Prior to attending university she was one of two fortunate Bermudians to
travel, learn and experience the culture and life in Ecuador, South America,
as part of the Rotary Exchange Program. Nishanthi was very active in the
community whilst attending high school participating in various youth groups
and conferences and she has continued this tradition in college. With a
love of theatre she has lent to her talent to numerous community productions,
expressing a keen desire to minor in this genre. Nashanthi’s future
career goal includes offering her services as a Spanish Interpreter for
International Business Relations.
Vashun Blanchette – Endurance
Vashun will be attending the University of East Anglia where he will
purse studies in Business Management. An ‘A’ student and excellent
footballer whose academics and sports, it was thought, would benefit from
further secondary schooling in London, Vashun was awarded a 4 year scholarship
from the Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited. Vashun was a member
of the U-15 and U-17 National Football Teams and serves as a positive role
model for the Somerset Cricket Club, where he is a Junior Member and mentor
to their Pee-Wee and Mini-minor soccer teams. Having recently completed
his ‘A’ Levels, Vashun is one step closer to achieving his
goal of one day holding a top post at one Bermuda’s large organizations, “doing
his utmost to ensure that the firm is operating as efficiently as possible.”
Jessica
Cabral – Elan
Jessica has been accepted into the Bachelor of Administration and Commercial
Studies program at The University of Western Ontario. An honour student
in high school, Jessica was appointed Prefect and Student Council Representative.
She participated in several school productions, was a member of various
sports teams and successfully completed both the Duke of Edinburgh
Scheme and Young Enterprise Program. Jessica is a talented dancer and
has participated
in overseas workshops at the New York Broadway Dance Centre. She has
also taken the initiative to study towards an Interior Design Diploma
course
at home while still immersed in her full time studies. Jessica’s
career goal is to become a certified Chartered Accountant and return
to the island where she intends to become a valuable member of the community.
Kanika Cameron – PartnerRe
Kanika is currently enrolled at St. Mary’s University where she is
pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Human Resource Management and
Industrial Relations. During high school, Kanika was involved in the Leo
Club, Word of Life and various committees. She successfully participated
in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and was an active member of her church
acting as a Junior Usher, a member of the Youth Choir and as a Liturgical
Dancer. Understanding the value of community service, having benefited
from participating as a Little Sister in the Big Brother & Big Sister
of Bermuda, Kanika volunteered as a candy striper at the hospital. Her
future career plan is to become a Human Resource Manager with experience
in industrial relations.
Raquel Correia – Allied World Assurance
Company
Raquel is currently attending Hartford University where she is studying
towards a Bachelors of Science in Business Administration, majoring
in Insurance and Finance. Raquel is an accomplished pianist and
enjoys playing
field hockey. She worked for Appleby Spurling & Kempe for two years
prior to attending university, which enabled her to gain a wealth of knowledge
about the corporate world. In recognition of her scholastic achievement,
Raquel has been named on Dean’s List for the current year and upon
completion of her studies, she plans to return to the island to render
her services as an Actuary and “become a proud member of the thriving
financial services/insurance industry.”
Zuri Darrell – Renaissance
Zuri will be attending Clemson University in the fall where he will purse
a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration. Appointed Senior
Prefect in high school, Zuri is a gifted pianist who was a member of the
school wind band and orchestra. As a keen sportsman and more notably an
excellent football player, Zuri won the Senior Boys Sports Championship
and proved to be an invaluable player on the U- 17 National Football Team.
A well rounded individual, he plans to focus his studies on a career in
finance and/or marketing with the intent to return to the island and “contribute
significantly to the growth of Bermuda as an important centre for e-commerce.”
Hataya Desilva – Swiss Re
Hataya Desilva has been accepted into the Richard J. Fox School of Business
Management at Temple University where she intends to purse a degree in
Actuarial Science. Hataya, a mature student, faithfully served on the
Bermuda Police Force for 13 years before realizing her dream of embarking
on another
career path that would both challenge and excite her. Prior to applying
to university, Hataya was enrolled in the Business Administration Program
at the Bermuda College where she received excellent grades and which
no doubt fueled her dedication to further her education. Upon completion
of
her Actuarial Degree, Hataya hopes to return to the island and “give
back to the community by helping to training other Bermudians who are unable
to pursue a formal education.
Gelena Dill – Ace Group
Gelena is currently attending the University of Victoria where she is
pursing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics. Prior to attending
university,
Gelena was enrolled at Bauder College where she graduated with an Associates
of Arts Degree in Fashion Design and was named to the Who’s Who List
among Students in American Junior Colleges. Her extracurricular activities
include involvement in an Investment Club, hockey and volleyball. Gelena
has expressed interest in pursuing a career either as a Financial Advisor
or Insurance Underwriter. As an Economics major she feels that she can
benefit Bermuda by “providing a service for younger generations which
will help make them aware of the financial avenues that are available for
them to pursue their goals.”
Jennifer Gracie – MaxRe
Jennifer will be attending the American University of Paris in the
fall, where she will pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations
and Political Science. Having achieved high academic honours throughout
high school, together with her leadership experience and community service,
Jennifer was awarded a two year scholarship to attend the Li Po Chun United
World College of Hong Kong, where she recently completed an intense International
Baccalaureate Program. While abroad Jennifer volunteered for the Red Cross
Relief Organization and at a Vietnamese orphanage. She is also the coordinator
for a student lead group which is organizing a conference between 40 Israeli
and Palestinian youth to take place in Hong Kong in Aug. 2005, with the
intent to promote mutual understanding and awareness of the difference
in cultures and beliefs. Jennifer would ultimately like to explore a career
in Political Risk Analysis and to hold an influential position within Bermuda’s
Government.
Kara Harris – JLT Risk Solutions
Kara will be attending the University of Hull in the fall where she
will be pursuing a degree in International Relations and Politics.
In high
school she was an Honour Roll student, and successfully participated
in both the
Young Enterprise Scheme and Duke of Edinburgh Award program. Kara
was also a candy-striper and a member of the Combined Cadet Force
RAF Section
whilst
abroad in Post Secondary school in the UK, where she recently successfully
completed her ‘A’ Levels. Upon graduation of university Kara
intends to be a major asset in the International Business arena.
Waynette Hollis – Lombard Odier
Darier Hentsch
Waynette will be attending the University of Tampa in the fall
where she will be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in International
Business Relations. While in high school she served as School
Prefect and was one of the top
students in her final year. Waynette’s enthusiasm for academics,
dance, church and community service has resulted in her winning
many awards. She has most recently attended Bible School in Canada
where she has been
working diligently in her missionary work participating in several
youth camps and conferences. Waynette is interested in a career
as a Financial
Analyst or in Foreign Exchange Trading and has not ruled out
the possibility of expanding into Law.
Shaki Hughes – Intelsat
Shaki will be attending Brock University in the fall, where he
will purse a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science.
Shaki graduated
from
Bermuda College with an Associates Degree in Arts- Computer
Information Systems and he is presently pursuing an A+ Certification
which
will certify him as a hardware and software technician. Shaki
currently works full-time
at BISYS Hedge Fund Services Ltd. as a Desktop Support Administrator
and part-time as a waiter at Grotto Bay, however despite the
demands of two
jobs he finds time to maintain a balance in his life by playing
league
basketball and baseball. Shaki is a member of the world renowned
organization Information Systems Audit Control Association
(ISACA) and was profiled
in the Royal Gazette as a “Role Model for the Future.” Through
sheer focus and dedication, together with the support of International
Business, Shaki intends on becoming one of Bermuda’s top Computer
Systems Analyst.
Ashley Mayne – HSBC
Ashley is currently attending Queen’s University where she is enrolled
in the Bachelor of Arts - Honours Degree program, majoring in Psychology.
While in high school she was chosen as a Prefect and participated in both
the Young Enterprise Company and Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, achieving all
three awards. Ashley also performed in various school productions and was
a member of the National Dance Theatre of Bermuda. It is through teaching
younger children to dance that she has gained a desire to follow a career
path that will enable her to return to Bermuda to be a part of an improved
educational system. Ashley believes that “all Bermudians, in furthering
their careers have an obligation to extend the opportunities that international
business has created.”
Tiffany Nelmes – MARSH
Tiffany has been accepted at St. Mary’s University where she will
be studying toward a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration.
An honour student throughout high school, Tiffany has been awarded numerous
dance awards and scholarships, and has successfully participated in the
Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Tiffany has remained active in the community
by volunteering at the Lorraine Rest Home in Warwick and the Salvation
Army. She has a 20 year plan which will see her successfully complete her
Degree with honours, gain certification as a Chartered Accountant, work
for a leading financial institution, and ultimately start her own firm.
Kelli Nusum – Oil Management Services
Kelli has been accepted in to the Bachelor of Science Program at Newcastle
University where she intends to major in Accounting and Financial Management.
Having achieved high academic honours throughout high school, together
with her leadership experience and community service, Kelli was awarded
a two year scholarship to attend the Red Cross Nordic United World
College in Norway, where she just recently completed her International
Baccalaureate.
In additional to winning numerous awards for high standards in academics
and sports, Kelli was awarded the PriceWaterhouseCooper’s Prize for
Accounting Studies. She is a member of a local swimming club and her school’s
football team and has trained with the Hockey League – National Squad.
Kelli plans to pursue a career as a Chartered Accountant and intends to
apply for summer internships during the course of her studies.
Amanda Oliver – Bacardi
Limited
Amanda has been accepted into the Bachelor of Business Studies at
the University of Edinburgh. During her years at high school, where she
served as Head Girl and an Honour Roll student, Amanda was nominated for
two Most Outstanding Teen Awards and was selected to represent Bermuda
in the Global Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. She is a dedicated
member of a league hockey team and has participated in the Duke of Edinburgh
Award Scheme, as well as two separate Outward Bound Expeditions. Upon graduation
Amanda plans to return to the island to work for one of the island’s
larger international business corporations which may afford her the opportunity
to gain experience working abroad.
Alicia Phillips – XL Capital
Alisha is currently attending Huron College - The University of Western
Ontario where she is enrolled in the Bachelor of Administration and Commercial
Studies Program, majoring in Finance and minoring in Economics. An honour
student in high school, Alisha was also a member of the choir and Leo
Club and successfully participated in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.
She participated for 11 years in majorettes and has performed locally
with her dance school in such productions as the Premier’s Concert.
Prior to entering university she participated in several mathematic competitions
and it is her love of this subject which has inspired her long term career
ambition of becoming a Chartered Financial Accountant.
Andrew Robinson – Zurich
Andrew has been accepted at the University of Guelph where he will study
toward a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Andrew, a student
of high academic ability, ranked toward the top of his class as an Honour
Roll Student. Over the last few years he was able to gain valuable experience
by serving as a member of the National Squash Team at various age levels,
which has afforded him the opportunity for a great deal of travel and
healthy competition. Having volunteered at the Bermuda Open, Andrew
saw first hand
how International Business plays a significant role in sponsoring such
events which help promote the island worldwide. Andrew plans to tailor
his studies towards marketing and “return to the island to give back
to the community to which he feels such an important part of.”
Kelli-Anne Robinson – Shell
Kelli-Anne will be attending Acadia University in the fall, where she to
will be studying toward a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration.
Kelli-Anne has maintained excellent grades through out high school and
as a result held the status of Deputy Honour Student and placed 3rd place
winner in the Dame Majorie Bean Essay Competition. Actively engaged in
a variety of positive activities in and out of school, she was a member
of the Tom Peter’s Concept “U” Leadership group, volunteered
at the Physical Abuse Centre, assisted seniors at the Matilda Smith Williams
Senior’s Home, is actively involved in her church youth group and
currently holds a part time position as Head Administrator for Solid Rock
Construction. Her goal is to apply her talents as an invaluable employee
at a highly respected business firm.
Tyrika Simmons – XL Re Ltd.
Tyrika has been accepted into the Bachelor of Science Program at Bennett
College where she plans to major in Mathematics. An honour student throughout
high school, Tyrika was involved in a number of co-curricular activities
inside and outside of school to include soccer, majorettes and bowling.
She served as Managing Director in the opening of her school’s first
student owned and operated store and has helped the school’s administrative
staff on a regular basis. Tyrika is also to be commended for the time and
contributions she has put in at Agape House – a holding place for
terminally ill patience. Upon graduation Tyrika plans to pursue a Master’s
Degree in Actuarial Science.
Vanessa Smith – Platinum Underwriters
Bermuda. Ltd.
Vanessa will be attending Dalhousie University in the fall where she will
be enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce program. While in high school
where she was selected as Head Girl and Prefect, Vanessa was an above
average, First Honours student who regularly placed in the top two in
her year group. A talented musician, she played her violin in the school
orchestra for 5 years. Vanessa participated in the Duke of Edinburgh
Scheme and Young Enterprise program and was also selected to attend both
the Tom Peter’s Future Business Leaders Conference and the Global
Young Leaders Conference last year in New York and Washington. It is
Vanessa’s desire “to have a career that is both satisfying
and challenging while also providing opportunities for upward mobility,” and
she is confident that a career as a Chartered Accountant is the right
choice.
Kijuana Tucker – Rosemount RE
Kijuana is currently attending Alabama A & M University where she is
pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Finance. Kijuana is involved in
the University’s International Student Association, Caribbean Student
Association and Pre-alumni Association and she was recently named to the
Dean’s List. As a self supporting student, Kijuana continues to work
very hard, both academically and physically to obtain a college education.
Upon completion of her studies, she intends to “return to her island
home to explore the vast range of career opportunities that are available
within the financial /investment sector.”
Romari Tucker – ORBIS
Romari has been accepted into the Bachelor of Commerce Program at McMaster
University where she plans to major in Finance. She has contributed to
her high school through a variety of activities which include being a
member of the Drama Club, Basketball and Netball teams, together with
the responsibilities that go along with being a School Prefect. Romari
is currently pursing her Gold Award under the Duke of Edinburgh Award
Scheme and has also successfully participated in the Conyers Dill and
Pearman Corporate Office Apprenticeship Program – a two year program
which provides summer employment for those wishing to avail themselves.
Upon graduation Romari intends to “explore the countless opportunities
made available by International Business.”
