ABIC Education Awards Alumni Association
ABIC reached out to past recipients of the ABIC Education Awards asking how the award impacted their lives. Our Alumni have a strong presence in International Business and are employed in various fields such as accounting, law, insurance, reinsurance, financial services and media. Below are quotes that our Alumni were kind enough to share.
Meet some of the ABIC Education Awards Alumni
As a past recipient of an ABIC Education Award, I know firsthand how helpful it is to have the financial support for college. ABIC also helped me first get my foot in the door of international business as a student. Now, years later as an employer in Bermuda, we at ACE continue to support scholarships and programs such as the ABIC Education Awards because they are vital to prepare young Bermudians for careers in international business.
Reese Fletcher
President and CEO, ACE Bermuda, 1980 Scholar
The ABIC Education Awards enables young Bermudians to further their education overseas and acquire the skills sets in order to participate and succeed in International Business.
As former scholarship recipients working in International business we are uniquely positioned to positively influence perceptions about Bermudians in the International business arena and perceptions about international business within our communities.
We must continue to tangibly demonstrate, by our continued contributions to the success of our companies, that it’s a great investment for international companies to award scholarships to Bermudian students.
Patrick Tannock
President, XL Insurance (Bermuda) Ltd., 1980 Scholar
I am eternally grateful for the financial assistance provided by the Education Awards, without which I would not have been able to pursue a Master’s degree in Business Administration. I was able to major in Accounting, which helped me to land a job in public accounting, where I earned my Certified Professional Accountant designation and ultimately began a successful career in International Business. This type of support, and the relationships that can result from it, will continue to be critical for the future success of Bermuda as an international business center.
Carlos C. Lee, Director of Finance and Operations, ALAS (Bermuda) Ltd., 1980 Scholar
The continued availability of ABIC Education Awards is vital to ensuring that students who have a desire to pursue a career in International Business and who also have a financial need are given the opportunity to pursue higher education.
I was the recipient of such an award and the funds provided helped to alleviate the financial burden I was facing at that time. The continued success of our International business sector here in Bermuda depends in large part on the availability of employees who have the appropriate academic qualifications and the ABIC Education Award plays an important part in fulfilling this mission.
Sylvan Richards, Assistant Vice President, General Casualty, Allied World Assurance Company, 1983 Scholar
I'm forever grateful to ABIC for the support provided during my time as an undergraduate at American University. The ABIC scholarship assisted with the opportunity to attend my first-choice university and exercise my mind to its fullest potential. In addition, the ABIC award expanded my network and fostered positive relationships within all levels of International Business in Bermuda. The experiences gained from my connection with ABIC are unsurpassed; I will continue to grow not only as a student, but an international businesswoman, and most importantly as a person.
Chesney Pearman, Senior Tax Associate, PwC, 2001 Scholar
Without the ABIC Education Awards, I can say with certainty that I would not be where I am today. I am a proud graduate of Acadia University with a Bachelors of Business Administration. I am also a proud member of the Bermuda Insurance Institute and have recently obtained my Associate in Reinsurance designation and my Associate in Insurance Services designation. I am currently in pursuit of my Chartered Property Casualty Underwriting qualification and I hope to ultimately become a Chartered Accountant. Thank you to ABIC for being my cornerstone and affording me the opportunity to obtain my undergraduate degree which has helped shape me into becoming the young professional that I am today!
Tiffany Swainson, Reinsurance Accountant Manager, Validus Re, 2003 Scholar
Being a recipient of the ABIC Scholarship helped me tremendously in achieving my goal of attaining a University education. This award also opened my eyes to the many opportunities available in Bermuda's International Business sector and I would encourage all young Bermudians to take advantage of this great award scheme.
Ryan Cabral, Catastrophe Modeling Analyst, PartnerRe, 2007 Scholar
The ABIC Education Award was instrumental in ensuring that I was able to complete my university degree in Business Management. Beyond that it gave me the opportunity to meet other like-minded students, a few of whom are still a valuable part of my network. This award is proof of IB’s continued effort to ensure the development of Bermudians and the Bermudian economy.
Lamar Caines, Financial Analyst, Planning and Analysis, Butterfield Bank, 2008 Scholar
In July past and present scholarship recipients from international business organizations attended our Alumni reception to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the ABIC Education Awards. Roy Fellowes, Chairman of the ABIC Education Awards, welcomed everyone to the event, stating, “The idea of the scholarship programme, came from an early realization that the key to long-term success was having a highly-educated and skilled local workforce. As a result, the ABIC Education Awards was founded, and over the past decade alone, more than $5 million has been shared with scholarship recipients and $524,000 had been raised this year to support 16 students in their undergraduate and graduate studies.”
In a speech to the 100 participants, Marsh & McLennan Companies President and CEO Brian Duppereault outlined the importance of the international business sector to the growth and continued success of the Bermuda economy – and the significant role the Education Awards plays in its success.
“Thirty-five years ago, ABIC recognized that the process starts with giving young Bermudians the opportunity to acquire the knowledge and skills that allow them to participate and thrive within the international business community,” he said.
